March feels simultaneously like winter and spring in Iceland. This trip was about capturing that transition and attempting to photograph the aurora, if conditions allowed. This image at Goðafoss shows the waterfall with ice dominating, but it's no longer completely in its grip. It can be tough to drag ourselves out of bed in the pre-dawn darkness, but scenes like this definitely make it worthwhile!
Meeting the Locals
Fun is a big part of any workshop I lead, and this one was no exception. A great group of people, here one of the participants is getting up close and personal with the ever-charismatic Icelandic horses.
Ice Caves
One of the wonders of Iceland in the early Spring is that ice caves start to open up beneath the glaciers. With expert guides, we went in and experienced these otherworldly places. It's just as amazing to experience these as it is to photograph them!
Ice Cave Detail
I find photographing the ice caves to be most enjoyable when looking at details. The depth and complexity of the patterns is endlessly fascinating, and hours can slip away while working in this environment.
Breiðamerkursandur
No visit to the south coast of Iceland would be complete without going to Breiðamerkursandur - the famous black sand beach next to the Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon.
A Pre-Breakfast Shoot

A Little Night Photography
Night photography is something I love, and something that running a trip in Iceland outside of the summer is great for. Here, while taking a break from photographing the Aurora, I noticed the wonderful moonlight on this range of mountains overlooking Jökulsárlón. It was a very beautiful night, with clouds scudding across the landscape.
Stokksnes Reflections
It's not always about the big mountains or dramatic skies. Sometimes beauty can be found in the shape of water flowing through mud. We spent a very enjoyable hour or two photographing this location.
Mývatn Aurora
We were treated to an incredible display of the Aurora at Mývatn in northern Iceland. This is a still frame from a time lapse of the evening's events. An unforgettable experience.
